IGFA World Record Peacock Bass

On September 4, 2021, Rodrigo Salles, CEO of Untamed Angling Brazil, landed a new All-Tackle Length World Record speckled peacock bass while fly fishing the Rio Marie in Brazil. Measuring in at 91 cm, Salles’s mammoth peacock was not eligible for the Fly Tackle Length Record as his tippet exceeded the 20 lb. breaking strength limit as specified by IGFA. A key component of the equipment was his Scientific Angler’s Sonar Jungle Custom Tip line. The fish hit a #4/0 red and white streamer.

An experienced peacock fly angler, Salles know that the fly line is a critical piece of equipment while searching for the “holy grail”- a fish over 20 pounds. He says that you need to practice and be able put a 40-foot cast right on target in cover, and then bomb out a 70-foot cast into the middle of a lagoon. Then the line has to get the fly to the right place and stand up to the rigors of handling these hard-fighting fish in tropical conditions.

Designed for a full range of jungle species, the Sonar Jungle Custom Tip line fills all of these needs and more. The fast-sinking head (7.75 ips) can be cut the exact length to maximize rod performance from 7-wt. to 15-wt. It has an intermediate running line that eliminates sag and gives a straight connection to the head for more positive hook sets. Tropic Core technology keeps the line slick and stiff in jungle environments. It comes with an add-on braided loop for attaching a leader.
