Brian Chan

Ambassador

Brian Chan has been fortunate enough to live and work for the past 35 years in Kamloops, British Columbia. Kamloops is world famous for its rainbow trout, being strategically situated in the center of hundreds of productive stillwater trout lakes. It is often referred to as the “Yellowstone of the North”. It is here that Brian, as a provincial fisheries biologist, managed the recreational Stillwater trout fisheries in the Thompson/Nicola Region, and developed his fishing skills.
Brian’s lifelong passion for fly fishing has resulted in his spending literally thousands of angling days on these world-class waters. He has shared his extensive knowledge of aquatic biology, trout ecology, entomology, and lake fly-fishing tactics with others, through a number of magazine articles, books, and instructional DVDs on fly fishing. Brian has been featured on many TV fishing shows and is currently a regular co-host on Sport Fishing on the Fly. In 2016, Brian was named Angler of the Year by Fly Rod & Reel Magazine.
Over the years, Brian has delivered many stillwater fly fishing seminars making him a much sought after speaker throughout North America.  During the past 15 years Brian has taken the seminar theme one step further by offering personalized guiding services on his home waters.  In 2018, Brian teamed up with Phil Rowley to develop and release a Stillwater Fly Fishing App to further educate lake fly fishers.
Brian enjoys introducing new fly fishers to this sport, getting them “hooked” on his lifelong passion, as much as he enjoys helping to refine the skills of even the most advanced stillwater anglers.
  1. Home water? It’s hard to pick one  when there are literally 80+ lakes within an hours drive of Kamloops.  Overall though I would have to pick Roche Lake as it has everything I like in a productive trout lake.
  2. What 2-3 lines do you use the most and why? First and foremost is the Amplitude Smooth Anaddro/Nymph as I do so much indicator fishing and long leader nymphing.  Second line is the Sonar Stillwater Seamless Density 5/7 which is the perfect fast sinking line for fishing deepwater blobs, boobies, leeches and dragonfly nymphs.
  3. What was the watershed moment when you knew you wanted to make your living fishing?  My first memory of fishing salmon in the ocean with my dad.  I was hooked for life way back then.
  4. If you could spend one day on the water with anyone, who would it be?No question, my Dad!
  5. On the rocks or straight?
 On the Rocks!
  6. If you could give one piece of angling advice to a younger version of yourself, what would it be?
Having a career that involves your passion is the best of both worlds
  7. What’s in the cooler?
The “Yeti Tumbler” has a dark roast coffee!
  8. What are you doing when you’re not fishing.
I love shooting and hunting with my compound bow and during winter I love to cross country ski
  9. Where would you most like to fish?
That’s a tough one.  I would have to say split the time between a spring fed river in Kamchatka and the Seychelles
  10. Stealth or bright lines?
Stealth for subsurface and bright tip sections for surface
  11. Two Truths and a Lie. – I love indicator fishing – Bobber Down! When not lake fishing I will be on the river watching a trout eat my dry flyLeft handed casters are better anglers!!
  12. Craziest experience on the water?
I was with a guest one day and we had a double header.  I was leaning over the side of the boat netting and releasing my fish while my guest was up at the bow of the boat fighting his fish.  Suddenly I heard a huge splash and I immediately thought my guest had fallen in the water.  I look up and and see line screaming of his reel as he is fighting an Osprey that had dove down and taken his fish!
