  1. Home water? Livingston, Montana As a guide , my home waters are the Yellowstone River and the Paradise Valley spring creeks (Armstrong, Nelson’s, DePuy’s).
  2. What 2-3 lines do you use the most and why? Amplitude Trout. For stillwater fishing: Frequency Intermediate, Sonar Hover For most of my trout fishing—especially on the spring creeks—I prefer to use rods with relatively light tips for short distance accuracy and for protecting light tippets, so I prefer to use “true to line weight” lines, so the Trout Taper has been my favorite since it was introduced. I also like the textured finish on some of the recent SA designs, from the original Sharkskin to the Sharkwave to the more recent Amplitude (although I am comparing these lines to the Amplitude Smooth this season). I like both the Frequency Intermediate and the Sonar Hover for shallow water presentations for lake fishing—they get the line through wind chop for better control and for improved hook setting yet allow me keep the fly in the zone near the surface.
  3. Where would you most like to fish?
I’ve become addicted to New Zealand sight fishing in the last 10 years, and I’d be glad to hike and fish there as often as I can make it happen—and as long as my body can handle hiking the backcountry rivers. I’d also like to get back to some fishing I haven’t done in years—pike in Canada or a trip to catch some big largemouth bass. Another trip I have been considering is to get back to Belize to fish with the guide that introduced me to flats fishing—while he and I are both still upright.
  4. Two Truths and a Lie.
I have a film credit in A River Runs Through It—with my first name misspelled. I have a Master’s degree in linguistics I don’t like a gin and tonic after a long guide day in August.
